Lactalis South Africa Wins 2024 Dairy Product of the Year

The winning Woolworths Mature Gouda 10 months is produced at Lactalis SA’s Ladismith factory in the Western Cape. It was one of a record number of 1 029 dairy products from 78 producers, including 12 first-time entrants and was selected by an independent panel of 82 judges representing 52 companies.

Chief judge and dairy expert, Graham Sutherland said, "The Woolworths 10-month mature Gouda has established a legacy for exceptional quality over a period. What makes it so unique is the combination of taste and texture, which produces a flavourful and satisfying tasting experience. The producer has put all the necessary measures in place to ensure that the quality of this cheese is maintained to the highest standard, and the competency of the cheesemaker is incredibly high. With this product, they have discovered an extremely potent winning formula.”

Lactalis SA received five SA Champions and three Qualité Awards which are a mark of excellence awarded only to the crème de la crème of entries. The company has claimed the Product of the Year top prize for three consecutive years in 2020, 2021, and 2022, as well as in 2018 and 2017.

A 10-month-old mature gouda, made especially for Woolworths by Lactalis South Africa (SA), was crowned the 2024 South African Dairy Product of the Year at the prestigious South African Dairy Awards on Thursday, 25 April 2024 at Eensgezind Estate outside Durbanville, Western Cape.

Commenting on receiving the award, Janse van Rensburg said, "We are excited to announce that Team Lactalis SA has once again earned the top honour in the dairy category, marking our sixth triumph in the last eight years. This remarkable achievement underscores our unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation. We extend heartfelt gratitude to all our dedicated teams whose relentless efforts and unwavering dedication have consistently maintained the highest standards of quality, meeting and surpassing the expectations of our valued consumers."
